Start with a simple formula
Divide your distance by your fuel efficiency, then multiply by the fuel price. Keep the units consistent.
For example: A 150-mile trip at 30 US MPG uses 5 US gallons. At $3.50 per US gallon, your fuel cost is $17.50.

THE MATH, MADE SIMPLE
A few numbers are all you need to estimate your next trip.
Divide your distance by your fuel efficiency, then multiply by the fuel price. Keep the units consistent.
For example: A 150-mile trip at 30 US MPG uses 5 US gallons. At $3.50 per US gallon, your fuel cost is $17.50.
US MPG is the number of miles you can drive on one US gallon of fuel. A higher number means better fuel efficiency.
L/100km is the number of liters used to drive 100 kilometers. A lower number means better fuel efficiency.
This calculator uses US gallons, not Imperial gallons.
1 mile = 1.609344 km · 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L
Divide the price per US gallon by your vehicle’s US MPG. At $3.50 per US gallon and 30 US MPG, the fuel cost per mile is about $0.1167 (11.67 cents). This includes fuel only, not maintenance, insurance, or depreciation.
Divide your budget by the fuel cost per mile or kilometer. At 30 US MPG and $3.50 per US gallon, $100 covers about 857.14 miles. The same inputs give you about 8.57 miles per dollar. Change Fuel Budget above to calculate your own range, or leave it blank to skip it.
No. Switching between US and metric units converts your distance, efficiency, and fuel price to equivalent values. The estimated total stays the same. Currency remains USD, and only US gallons are used.
